The first all-Southwest Conference awards of the fall have been announced and the Roseburg Indians were represented well in soccer and volleyball.
Roseburg boys soccer coach Jim Giraudo was selected co-Coach of the Year after guiding the Indians to their first 6A state playoff berth since 2012. Roseburg turned things around from a 3-11 record last year to a 7-5-2 record in 2017. The Indians finished fourth in the Southwest Conference and will face Liberty in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday.
Along with coach Giraudo, five Roseburg players earned all-conference honors. Senior Jacob Wilson was voted as the lone first team selection for the Indians. Fellow senior Andrew Yun was a second team selection and Robert Gosman, Stephen Lake, and Patrick Giraudo were all honorable mention selections.
The Roseburg girl’s soccer team had a tough year, finishing without a win, but junior Callie Price earned first team honors for her efforts on the field. Emily Wheeler, Roseburg’s junior goal keeper, was selected to the honorable mention list.
Roseburg’s volleyball team finished third in the Southwest Conference this year and has reached the second round of the state playoffs. The Indians reaped the rewards of a successful season with two first team selections. Junior Karey Lomica was the Southwest Conference’s first team libero, while junior Hannah Bartlett was selected first team as a hitter.
The Tribe also had three honorable mention selections; senior Taylor Russell, junior Faith Jordan, and sophomore Chay Swenson.
Roseburg volleyball will face Southwest Conference champion Sheldon in the second round of the playoffs on Saturday. Sheldon’s Grace Nelson was voted the conference Player of the Year and Irish coach Martine Wodke was selected co-Coach of the Year along with North Medford coach Malcolm Munson.
