COQUILLE – The South Umpqua volleyball team will have to win a play-in game to reach the state playoffs after losing in straight sets to Marshfield in league playoff game Tuesday night at Coquille High School.
The Lancers played the Pirates close for most of the match, but never could get over the hump. With the win, Marshfield clinches a berth in the first round of the 4A state playoffs, while South Umpqua heads to the play-in round.
The play-in round games were announced late Tuesday night after all the 4A games went final. South Umpqua will host Corbett, the third place team out of the Tri-Valley Conference. The Lancers finished the season 10-8 overall, while Corbett went 11-9 overall this year. The game is scheduled to be played on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Sutherlin also reached the postseason as an at-large team after finishing fourth in the Sky-Em League. The Lady Bulldogs will head to Henley for a play-in game. Henley is the second place team out of the Skyline Conference, but finished ranked No. 18 by the OSAA. Sutherlin finished the season 10-10 overall and ranked No. 14. The Bulldogs and Hornets will square off on Friday at 4 p.m.
