ELMIRA – The Sutherlin volleyball team did everything it could to help its chances of reaching the postseason on Monday by sweeping Elmira 3-0 in the regular season finale for both teams. Now, all the Lady Bulldogs can do is sit back and wait.

Sutherlin finished the regular season as the fourth place team in the Sky-Em League, meaning the Bulldogs would normally miss out on a berth in a play-in game. But the Sky-Em has been one of the best in the 4A classification and could possibly send four teams to the post season. It will all come down to how the rankings shake out when they finalize tonight at 10 p.m.

If the Bulldogs do make the cut for a play-in game, they will play on the road at some point over the next week. The winner of their match would advance to the first round of the state playoffs.

While the Sutherlin girls are waiting to see how things end up tonight, there are a lot of local teams that will be out on the court trying to improve their postseason status.

Probably the biggest match-up of the night will be a league playoff game between South Umpqua and Marshfield. The two teams finished tied atop the Far West League volleyball standings and will play tonight to decide which team gets the top playoff seed and the automatic berth that comes along with it. The loser of tonight’s match will host a play-in round game.

The league playoff contest begins tonight at 6 p.m. at Coquille High School.
