TRI-CITIES – The South Umpqua volleyball team capped a big week with its biggest win of the season on Thursday. The Lady Lancers defeated Marshfield 3-2 to move into a tie for first place with the Pirates.
Marshfield jumped out to a 2-1 lead, putting the Lancers on the brink of a loss. South Umpqua battled back, though, to win the final two sets and even the season series between the two teams.
Shalyn Gray finished with 18 kills, three blocks, and 15 digs for the Lancers. Sydnie Johnson had 47 assists and Alyssa Rainville and Kalie Mann defended the nets with a combined 14 blocks. Mann had a team-high nine blocks and Rainville had five.
The Lancers and Pirates are both 6-2 in league play with two more league games left to go. South Umpqua still has to face last place Brookings-Harbor and third place Siuslaw.
The Roseburg volleyball team beat Grants Pass 3-1 Thursday night and inched closer to securing a playoff berth. The Indians are one win away from clinching no worse than a fourth place finish in the Southwest Conference, which would guarantee a playoff bid.
Up next, the Tribe will compete in the Clearwater Classic in Bend this weekend.
