The high school football season has three to four weeks left in the regular season, depending on the classification, and there are still a number of Umpqua Basin teams that are fighting for a spot in the post season. Last year only four local teams reached the first round of the state playoffs. So far this year, there’s only a couple of teams that seem to be out of the playoff conversation.
The Roseburg Indians host North Medford on Friday night in a contest that could be called “must-win” if the Tribe hopes to reach the post season for the first time since 2014. Roseburg, North Medford, and Willamette are all tied for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Southwest Conference.
In addition to tonight’s game against the Black Tornado, the Indians still have a road contest at Willamette on the schedule and wins in both games would secure Roseburg a berth in the first round.
Roseburg’s Homecoming contest begins tonight at 7 p.m. If you can’t make it to the game, make sure to tune in for coverage on 1490 The Score or watch online at 541radio.com. Pregame coverage starts at 6:45 p.m.
The Sutherlin Bulldogs are fresh off their first Sky-Em League win since joining the league in 2014. The ‘Dawgs will try to build off the momentum as they head to Elmira tonight. The Falcons are winless in Sky-Em League play so far this year. A win for Sutherlin would go a long way towards helping the Bulldogs stay in contention for a 4A play-in game.
Tune in for coverage of the contest from Elmira at 6:45 p.m. on i101-fm or listen to the online stream of the game.
In the Far West League, Douglas and South Umpqua are both 1-1 and in a battle for a play-in game. With only a few games left on the schedule any slip-up could cost either team a shot at the post season.
Tonight, Douglas travels to winless Brookings-Harbor for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The South Umpqua Lancers will try to pull off a major upset at home against undefeated league leader North Bend at 7 p.m.
