ROSEBURG – The Umpqua Community College obstacle course racing team held its first home meet of the season on Saturday at its brand new course on the Winchester campus.

The RiverHawks dominated the men’s competition, while the women had a couple of top finishers. The field for the Kick-Off Run was comprised of the UCC teams and individual competitors that registered for the race.

Leading the way for the men was sophomore William Turner. The Roseburg native crossed the finish line first with a time of 24:13. Turner, a 2016 graduate of the Geneva Academy, placed 47 seconds ahead of former Roseburg High School athlete Hayden Luttrell, who finished second for the RiverHawks. Overall, 10 of the first 11 finishers in the men’s competition were members of the UCC racing team.

On the women’s side, Adrionna Taylor was the first UCC runner to finish the course. She came in second behind Lisa Cornutt, who finished the more than two-mile course in 31:01.

The RiverHawks compete again next Saturday when they travel to Salem for Race the Inferno.

In other UCC sporting news, the volleyball team opened up conference play over the weekend. The RiverHawks were swept in matches both Friday and Saturday. Clark College came to UCC and won 3-0 on Friday. Mt. Hood Community College swept the RiverHawks on Saturday.

The volleyball team gets back to action on Friday at home against Chemeketa.
