WILSONVILLE – The Executive Board of the Oregon School Activities Association handed out penalties for violations reported since the beginning of the year at a meeting Monday in Wilsonville.

There were four Umpqua Basin schools that were given penalties for violations. Yoncalla High School had the largest fine issued for any school in connection to an alleged recruiting violation by the boy’s head basketball coach.

Yoncalla was issued a $2,500 fine and could be banned from post season play if the offending coach, Bid Van Loon, is rehired as a coach at the high school before the 2020-21 season. The OSAA lists Van Loon as no longer part of the coaching staff at Yoncalla and the New Review reports that has resigned his position.

According to the OSAA, Van Loon violated the “Undue Influence” rule. In comments listed with the Executive Board meeting summary, the coach allegedly delivered transfer paperwork to a student that attends a neighboring school and also drove a non-Yoncalla High School student to an open gym session in the spring.

Van Loon also received a penalty. The coach would be forced to serve an 8-game suspension if he were to return to coaching at any OSAA member school before the 2020-21 season.

Glide, Elkton, and South Umpqua all received penalties as well. They all three received fines of $250 or less. South Umpqua and Glide also had to forfeit at least one contest due to student eligibility violations.
