LAKESIDE – The South Umpqua girls cross country team placed four runners in the top 15 of the North Bend Tugman Invitational and took second out of five teams on Wednesday in Lakeside.

Junior Aneykah McCall led the Lady Lancers with a fifth place finish. She crossed the finish line with a time of 21:05.80 and came in just under two minutes behind the overall winner Sailor Hutton from Bandon.

Following McCall from South Umpqua was senior Savannah Slay (21:19.50) in seventh, Bethany Kalebaugh (22:10.60) in 11th, and Haven Pickup (22:36.40) in 15th. South Umpqua had eight total runners in the girls varsity race and finished only four points behind Siuslaw for the team title.

Douglas and Oakland also had runners in the girl’s race. Claire Shaham (24:41.40) was the first Oakland runner to cross and Nevaeh Poore (26:33.60) was the first female runner from Douglas to finish.

On the boy’s side, the South Umpqua runners were the top placing local team in fifth. Damien Shockey (17:52.60) led the Lancer runners with a 12th place finish. Sophomore Wyatt Smith (19:27.90) from Oakland was the first Oaker to reach the finish line and Jacob Hester (20:15.50) crossed first for Douglas. Glide’s William Byrd (20:27.00) also ran in the race and finished 43rd.
