OAKLAND, ORE. – For a second year in a row the Oakland Oakers have opened the football season with a win over Sutherlin and it was almost the same score.

The Oakers (1-0) topped the Bulldogs (0-1) 22-6 Friday night, in a non-league contest at Eddy Field in Oakland. Last year, Oakland won 18-6 in the opening game on the Sutherlin turf field.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Oakers drew first blood when Andrew Harrington finished off a 78-yard drive with a three-yard run for a score with 7:54 to go before halftime and with the two-point conversion it was 8-0.

It looked like the half was going to end that way but with :04 left, Harrington weaved his way through Bulldog defenders to go 44 yards for another score. The two-point try was not good and the Oakers led 14-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, Harrington capped a 50-yard drive with a four-yard run for his third touchdown and Bryan Lehman ran for the conversion to make it 22-0 and the Oakers were firmly in control. Harrington finished the night with 205 yards on 28 carries.

The Bulldogs continually hurt themselves with fumbles, penalties, dropped passes and interceptions, and the Oaker defense kept running back Conner Grauf in check most of the night.

Sutherlin finally got into the end zone when Zach Yarbrough found tight end J.R. Bailey at the goal line with 2:06 left, but it was too late and Oakland ran out the clock.

Sutherlin has lost 16 straight, and has not won since they beat Oakland in the opener two seasons ago.

Oakland will visit 3A Glide next Friday and Sutherlin will be at Douglas for a non-league contest.
