ROSEBURG – Playing indoors with not much of a threat for poor air quality, volleyball teams around the Umpqua Basin took to the court for a busy Tuesday.
The Roseburg volleyball team hosted Ashland for its first home game of the season. The Indians didn’t have much trouble with the Grizzlies, winning 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-23) to improve to 2-0 on the year.
All 13 players got a chance to see the floor for Roseburg. Sophomore Alyssa Fox had six kills to lead the attack while Taylor Russell had 15 assists and Karey Lomica recorded 14 digs.
Roseburg will next take the court for its first Southwest Conference game next Tuesday. The Indians are the reigning league champs and will begin their title defense against the Irish at home.
Elsewhere, the Sutherlin Bulldogs edged the South Umpqua Lancers, 3-0 (26-24, 25-14, 27-25). Despite sweeping the match, Sutherlin had to battle the Lancers for the win. Sydnee Allen finished with eight kills for Sutherlin and Hope Adamson and Caity Carillo combined for nine aces.
The Douglas Trojans won their season opener against Elmira, 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-14, 25-17).
Days Creek volleyball beat Myrtle Point and Riddle on Thursday. Brianna Kewish had a big day for the Wolves, getting 10 kills and four blocks in the win over Myrtle Point.
Camas Valley rebounded after a sluggish start to beat Gold Beach, 3-1 (8-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-16). Brooklyn Wolfe had 13 kills, five aces, and five blocks to lead the way for the Hornets.
Elkton swept Oakland, 3-0 (25-5, 25-10, 25-13 ), behind nine kills from Hannah Maxwell and 25 assists by Grace Whitley.
Yoncalla swept Mohawk, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-23).
