The fall high school sports season starts Thursday with volleyball, soccer, and cross country competitions going on around the state.
It’s not a full slate of games for local teams from the Umpqua Basin, but there are quite a few in action.
Volleyball will be the busiest sport for local teams. Roseburg visits Thurston as the Indians begin what will be their defense to last year’s conference championship. A number of local small schools will also be in uniform. Glendale and Days Creek will play in a round robin at Butte Falls. Camas Valley and Oakland visit Reedsport for a few matches and Elkton hosts Mohawk.
In soccer, the Roseburg boys are on the road against the Thurston Colts and the RHS girls are visiting Sherwood for the season opener. The Glide boys are on the road against Pacific Thursday afternoon.
There will also be a handful of cross country teams in Cottage Grove for a two-mile trial. Roseburg, Douglas, and Sutherlin will all take part in the 14-team event.
