ROSEBURG – The baseball season might be over in the Umpqua Basin, but there could be plenty of action at Legion Field in the near future.

Commissioners for the Earle B. Stewart American Legion Post 16 in Roseburg have hopes of converting the natural turf field at Bill Gray Stadium into an artificial turf field this fall. The process got started over the summer when the commissioners were given permission to begin the project by the Roseburg City Council. Legion Field is owned by the city of Roseburg and all projects must first be approved by the city councilors.

According to a report from the News Review, the first step in the process will be bore testing now that the baseball season has wrapped up. The tests will reveal the depth of the soil and how much gravel will be needed to form a base for an artificial turf field. Once that information is known, the Legion will have a more detailed budget outlined for the project and will be able to fully begin fundraising. Ground will not be broken on the project until the complete funds for the project are raised, per the City Council’s requirements.
