EUGENE – The Roseburg Pepsi Bottlecaps saw their season come to an end one win shy of making it to the championship round of the American Legion Class A Northwest Regional on Monday.
The ‘Caps nearly dug out of an early hole against the Cody Cubs from Wyoming, but fell short in the end with a 20-17 loss.
Wyoming jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Roseburg’s Mason Littlefield. Pepsi managed to get a couple runs back in the home half of the first, but trailed 10-2 through the first three innings.
The Cubs got out to as much as an 11-run lead in the fourth inning, but the Bottlecaps slowly worked their way back into contention. Pepsi got back to within four runs in the sixth inning and drew to within three runs with a six-run eighth inning.
Pepsi managed to get the game-tying run on base late in the game but couldn’t get the clutch hit to close the gap. Wyoming managed to hold off the Bottlecaps in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.
Roseburg ended the year with a 26-11 overall record. The third place finish was the best for the Roseburg single-A club since it won the regional tournament in 1988. Pepsi went 2-2 in the Northwest Regional this year.
Wyoming moves into the championship round against Post 87 from Layton, Utah. The Cubs will need to win twice on Tuesday to claim the title. Utah hasn’t lost so far in the tournament. The first of possibly two games will begin at noon from Swede Johnson Stadium in Eugene.
