NORTH BEND – The American Legion Single-A regular season is wrapping up this week.

The Roseburg Pepsi Bottlecaps finished the regular season with a split against North Coos in a league doubleheader on Wednesday night. The Bottlecaps, who had already clinched the league title and berth in the state tournament, won 5-2 in the opener, but North Coos won game two 13-12 in eight innings.

The win for North Coos secures a second place finish in the Area 4 North standings and guarantees the Waterfront a spot in the upcoming state tournament. The victory also means that the Umpqua Lions can finish no better than third in the league standings and will need to win a play-in game to reach the state tournament.

The Lions finish the regular season Thursday night with a home doubleheader against Grants Pass. Game one begins at 6 p.m. at Legion Field. Umpqua needs just one win to clinch third place in the Area 4 North standings and keep their hopes of making the tournament alive.

The third place team from the Area 4 North league will face the third place team from the Area 4 South league in a one-game playoff. The winner advances to the state tournament.

The Single-A American Legion state tournament will be held at North Marion High School in Aurora, Oregon. The games get underway on Wednesday.
