GRANTS PASS – The Roseburg Pepsi Bottlecaps clinched the Class-A Area 4 North championship with an 8-7 win over Grants Pass in the opening game of a doubleheader on Monday in Grants Pass.
The ‘Caps scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning and then got an inning-ending-double-play in the bottom of the seventh to finish off the victory.
Grants Pass held off a late Pepsi rally in game two for a 12-11 win and a split of the league doubleheader.
The league championship secures the Bottlecaps a berth in the state tournament at North Marion High School. The ‘Caps finish the regular season with a league doubleheader at North Coos on Wednesday.
The Umpqua Lions swept a league doubleheader against South Coos at Legion Field on Monday. Umpqua won 10-2 in the opener and 15-1 in the nightcap. The wins keep the Lions in contention for a second place finish and a berth in the Single-A state tournament.
If Umpqua is unable to catch North Coos for second place, the team can still reach the state tournament by winning a one-game playoff with the third place team from the Area 4 South standings.
Up next for Umpqua is the regular season finale, a home doubleheader against Grants Pass on Thursday.
