ROSEBURG – The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s baseball team dropped its final pair of home league games to the Grants Pass Nuggests on Sunday and now will need to win its final two games of the regular season if the team hopes to make the postseason this weekend.
The Doc’s lost the opener 7-2 and Grants Pass took the nightcap 9-8 in 10 innings. The wins secured no worse than a second place finish for the Nuggets and dropped the Doc’s one-game behind Willamette Valley for the fourth and final playoff spot out of the Area 4 league.
Game one was tied 2-2 going to the seventh inning. The Nuggets scored five runs to break open the contest. Roseburg committed three errors in the seventh inning and the Nuggets seemed to find a way to hit the ball exactly where the Doc’s couldn’t get it.
The Stewies couldn’t muster a comeback and were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh.
In the nightcap, Grants Pass built a 7-0 lead after five innings of play, but the Doc’s rallied back to score six runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to tie the game.
The contest went to extra innings and in the 10th, the Nuggets finally broke the tie with two unearned runs against Carter Dahl. The Doc’s managed to manufacture one run in the bottom of the 10th, but the game-tying run was left standing at second base.
Up next, the Doc’s will face fourth place Willamette Valley in the regular season finale on Tuesday. If the Doc’s win both games against the Titans, they will move into fourth place and secure a berth in a Super Regional series. If the Doc’s lose, they will finish the season in fifth place.
