ROSEBURG – The Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s baseball team hosted the Portland Barbers for a nonleague doubleheader on Sunday night to wrap-up three straight days of games. The Doc’s and Barbers split the series, but both games came down to the wire and provided plenty of fireworks.

The Doc’s were in prime position to win their third straight game in the opener, but couldn’t capitalize and lost 6-5 in extra innings.

Roseburg tied the game at 5-all in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out single by Collin Warmouth. The game remained tied going to the home half of the seventh inning. The Doc’s loaded the bases with just one out, but Portland pitcher Micheal Bennett got a strike out and a ground out to end Roseburg’s chances of walking-off with a win.

The game went to the eighth inning, where the Barbers took advantage of a errant pickoff throw to get the go-ahead run to third base with one out. Daniel Stauffer grounded out for the second out of the inning, but the runner scored from third to put Portland up 6-5.

The Doc’s (11-16; 5-7) got the game-tying run to second in the bottom of the eighth, but they couldn’t force the game to go any further. Carter Dahl took the loss for the Doc’s after giving up only two unearned runs.

Portland built a lead in game two early on and stretched a one-run lead to four run with three runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined. Leading 7-3 going to Roseburg’s final at bats, it seemed like a Barbers’ sweep was a foregone conclusion.

Yet, the Doc’s somehow managed to find a way to scratch out an 8-7 victory.

Down to their last out, Shawn Rigsby drew a walk and Collin Warmouth reached on an error. Still in need of more runners, it looked like the Doc’s ran out of time as Cody Gray swung and missed at strike three, but the ball got away and Gray was able to reach base on the dropped third strike.

Rigsby scored on the play as well and the Doc’s were within three runs with two runners on base. A walk to Treven Jacks loaded the bases and he was lifted for pinch runner Matt Gibson.

Cody Johnson stepped to the plate and hit a slow grounder to shortstop Caleb Nutting. The throw to first for the final out skipped away and the Doc’s scored three runs on the error to tie-up the score.

Portland needed just one more out to force extras for a second consecutive game, but the ball four pitch to Carter Dahl got past the Portland catcher and Cody Johnson managed to waltz home for the walkoff victory. The Doc’s scored five unearned runs in the seventh without a hit.

Treven Jacks finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. The Doc’s had just four hits in the nightcap. Micky Thompson, Alex Osoria, and Michael Bennett all had doubles for Portland, which finished with 13 hits in game two.

With the split, the Doc’s have now won four out of their last six games and will try to take that momentum into a doubleheader against league-leader Medford on Tuesday. Game one of the contest begins at 6 p.m. from Harry & David Field in Medford. Tune in for the games on CBS Sports Radio 1490 The Score or watch online at 541radio.com.
