SPOKANE, WA – Three local track and field athletes qualified for the 51st USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships by finishing in the top five of their events at the Region 13 Junior Olympics Championships in Spokane, Washington last week.
Jazmin Wilberg of Camas Valley, Mackenzii Phillips of Lookingglass, and Tyler Sconce of Roseburg all qualified for the national meet, which will be held in Lawrence, Kansas July 24-30.
Phillips took second in the javelin for girls aged 13-14 and Wilberg finished fifth in the girls 17-18 year old long jump. Sconce qualified for the national meet in two events. The soon-to-be Roseburg High senior won the boys 17-18 year old shot put with a PR throw of 16.48-meters. Sconce also placed second in the discus with another PR toss.
Also at the regional championships was another Roseburg thrower, Dalton Rasmussen. He battled illness throughout his two events and finished in the top 10 of both the discus and javelin, but did not qualify for the national meet. Rasmussen reached the national meet last year in both discus and javelin.
