FAIRFIELD, CA – The Roseburg Doc Stewart’s struggled against some very good competition at the Western Amateur Baseball Federation Championships Tournament in Fairfield, California last week, but the Doc’s finished the tournament on a high note.

The Doc Stewart’s (8-14) pulled off a 12-1 win over Merced in their final game from California on Sunday. Roseburg sent 17 hitters to the plate in the third inning and scored 11 runs to jump out to an 11-1 lead. The 10-run advantage was more than enough for starting pitcher Cody Johnson, who held off the Volunteers down the stretch to earn the complete game victory, his first of the season.

Johnson gave up the lead when he was touched up for two doubles in the top of the third inning. Merced scored the first run of the game on Oscar Trejo’s two-out double to right-center field.

It didn’t take long for the Doc’s to respond to the score. In the home half of the third inning, the Doc’s connected for seven hits and took advantage of three Merced errors to score 11 times. It was the most runs the Doc’s had scored in one inning this season and it’s only the third time they have put up a double-digit run total.

With the big lead, Johnson settled in and allowed just one more hit to the Volunteers the rest of the game. Johnson pitched five innings and allowed just four hits, while walking four and striking out seven.

Cody Gray went 2-for-4 to lead the Doc’s at the plate. He drove in one run and Kyler Leischner went 1-for-2 with three RBI. Brenden Ibarra went 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.

The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for Roseburg. The team finished 1-4 in the Fairfield Tournament.

Next up will be a nonleague contest against the Corvallis Gerding Builders Marketmen on Friday night. The game begins at 6 p.m. from Hansen Stadium at Taylor Field.
