CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State baseball team has been selected as the No. 1 National Seed when NCAA postseason play begins this weekend.
The Beavers, who are hosting their sixth NCAA Regional, will open the tournament Friday against fourth-seeded Holy Cross. Also at the Corvallis Regional are No. 2 Nebraska and No. 3 Yale. Oregon State will meet one of those teams Saturday depending on the first day’s action.
The Beavers take on Holy Cross at 8 p.m. PT Friday. Nebraska and Yale will open the regional at 1 p.m. The first game Friday is slated to air on ESPN3 with Oregon State’s game at 8 on ESPNU.
Oregon State is a national seed for the third time in the last five seasons. The Beavers were the No. 3 seed in 2013, followed by the No. 1 selection in 2014.
The Beavers are carrying a 16-game win streak into the postseason opener. The streak is the longest current one in the country and the fifth-longest overall. Of course, the top streak of the season belongs to the Beavers, who won 23 straight from late February to mid-April. OSU had two perfect months in 2017 – the team was 15-0 in both March and May.
OSU has the nation’s lowest earned run average at 1.84, which helped the Beavers to a 27-3 record in Pac-12 Conference play. The 27 wins surpassed 1981 Arizona State’s 26 for the most ever in conference action.
The postseason appearance is the 17th all-time for the Beavers, and the eighth in the last 10 seasons. The Beavers are 51-33 (.607) all-time in the postseason, including a 30-21 (.588) record in NCAA Regional games.
The Beavers are 26-6 all-time at Goss Stadium in the postseason, including an 18-4 mark in NCAA Regional play.
Nebraska is the No. 2 seed at the regional, and holds a 35-20 record on the season, going 16-7 in the Big Ten. The Huskers and Beavers met in Surprise, Ariz., with Oregon State winning 10-1 and 5-2.
Yale, the No. 3 seed, won the Ivy League this season and holds a 32-16 record this season. The Bulldogs were 16-4 in conference play.
Holy Cross is the No. 4 team in the regional, and will come to Corvallis with a 23-27 overall record. The Crusaders went 12-8 in Patriot League and won its conference tournament.
