BEAVERTON – The high school baseball season came to an end for the Roseburg Indians with a 9-3 loss to the Beaverton Beavers in the second round of the 6A state playoffs on Wednesday.

Roseburg jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a two-out single by Terrell Jacks, but the moment was fleeting. Beaverton rallied against Roseburg starter Cody Johnson to score twice in the second and pull ahead 2-1. The Beavers led the rest of the contest and now move on to face Lake Oswego in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The playoff game was close through the first four innings. Both sides threatened score, but the starting pitchers managed to work out of tight situations.

Beaverton (23-5) got two runners in scoring position with no outs against Johnson in the first inning, but the junior got out of the jam without giving up a run. Beavers’ starter Trace Hokkanen was equally impressive, stranding two Roseburg runners at second and one at third in the first four innings.

The game turned in the fifth inning when Beaverton scored five runs on seven hits and two Roseburg errors. The Beavers sent seven hitters to the plate against Johnson and all seven found a way on base. Collin Warmouth came on in relief and faced to batters before getting out of the inning.

Roseburg (16-12) responded with two runs in the sixth, but that was all they could muster. Beaverton relief pitcher Manuel Castineira struck out the side in the seventh to finish the game.

Luke Lucido and Spencer Six each had two hits for Roseburg. Lucido had a double and scored twice.

All nine hitters recorded a hit for Beaverton, led by Kevin Watson who went 3-for-4 and scored twice. Jacob Bunn, Trace Hokkanen, and Karac Leyva all had two hits for the Beavers as well.

The Indians graduate four seniors, including All-Conference honorable mention leftfielder Carson Townswend and starting first baseman Treven Jacks. Roseburg will also say goodbye to pitcher Max Labahn and first baseman Paxton Shinn.

Roseburg will return a wealth of young players that will have plenty of experience. Sophomores Zack Mandera and Collin Warmouth return for next year after earning All-Conference first team honors. Juniors Luke Lucido and Cody Johnson are returning All-Conference selections as well – Lucido a first team selection and Johnson second team.

The Indians also had a couple of freshman contribute this year. Back-up catcher and designated hitter Spencer Six was an honorable mention selection this year and Doran Gillespie made the most of his mid-season call-up with a few clutch hits.

Roseburg will return seven everyday starters in 2018, which should provide a bright outlook for the program.
