ROSEBURG – Garrett Russell’s two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning scored the game-winning run for Roseburg in a 5-4 victory over Sunset in Wednesday’s OSAA endowment game at Legion Field.

Russell’s sharply hit ground ball to left field gave Spencer Six enough time to score from second base and complete Roseburg’s comeback. The Indians trailed Sunset 4-3 to start the eighth inning, but Brendan Ibarra drove in the tying run on a bases loaded sacrifice fly and Russell won the game in the next at bat.

The Apollos took a one-run lead in the top of the eighth on an attempted suicide squeeze. With the bases loaded and one out, Sunset’s Satchel Phillips tried to put down a bunt while Sam Winter broke from third to the plate. Phillips missed the bunt attempt and Winter was left in a rundown.

The Indians had Winter caught, but Zack Mandera’s throw to catcher Spencer Six was off the mark and the ball got away allowing Winter to score on the error and give the Apollos a 4-3 advantage. Sunset’s Blake Hansen also tried to score on the error, but Roseburg pitcher Max Labahn was backing up the play and got the ball back to the plate in time record the second out.

Labahn was able to get the final out of the eighth to keep the Indians within one. The senior lefty came into the game with the bases loaded and limited the damage. He pitched only 2/3 of an inning, but got the win thanks to Roseburg’s offensive performance in the home half of the eighth.

The Tribe used five pitchers in the match-up, which served as a tune-up before Roseburg visits South Salem for a first round playoff game on Monday. Zack Mandera got the start, but no Roseburg pitcher lasted more than two innings.

Russell finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Brendan Ibarra went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI.

Satchel Phillips had two hits and scored two runs for Sunset.

Up next, the Roseburg baseball team visits South Salem for a first round playoff game on Monday. The contest begins at 4:30 p.m. from South Salem High School. Follow the game on CBS Sports Radio 1490 The Score or watch online at 541radio.com.
