BROOKINGS – The South Umpqua softball team picked-up two wins in its final regular season doubleheader on Wednesday to claim its first Far West League championship since the 2014 season.

The Lady Lancers defeated Brookings-Harbor 14-2 in game one to clinch the league title outright and they polished off the regular season with a 9-6 victory in the nightcap.

South Umpqua is now guaranteed a bye through the play-in round and will wait to find its first round opponent in the state playoffs, which begin May 24.

The Douglas softball team was swept in its final doubleheader of the regular season on Wednesday to fall to fourth place in the Far West League. The Lady Trojans lost to Marshfield 8-7 and 20-13.

The fourth place finish does not guaranteed a play-in game appearance for the Trojans, but they are highly ranked and could still make a play-in game once the rankings freeze on Saturday night.

On the Far West League baseball diamond, Douglas and South Umpqua swept their final league doubleheaders to end the regular season tied for second.

South Umpqua junior Taylor Gross went 6-for-6 in a twin bill against Brookings-Harbor and the Lancers took game one 10-0 and game two 7-3.

Douglas finished off the regular season with a 10-5 win in game one of a doubleheader against Marshfield and the Trojans earned the sweep with a 6-3 victory in game two.

Douglas won the season series against South Umpqua and receives a home play-in game as the 2-seed. South Umpqua will travel for a play-in game as the Far West’s third place team. Play-in games will take place on Thursday next week.
