On the softball diamond, South Umpqua moved into a tie for first place with Douglas after picking up a 9-4 win on Tuesday. Sophomore Tayah Kelley threw a 3-hitter and struck out 15 for the win. Fellow sophomore Kalie Mann went 4-for-4 at the plate with two home runs and five RBI.

Douglas took the lead first with three runs in the first inning, but they were limited to just one run the rest of the way. South Umpqua racked up 14 hits off of Trojans’ starter Molly Lavin-Williams and took the lead for good with five runs in the third.

The Douglas baseball team moved into a tie with South Umpqua for second place in the league standings after pulling off a 7-6 win over the Lancers on Tuesday in Myrtle Creek. Douglas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but the Lancers rallied back and had the game-tying run on second base in the bottom of the seventh, but they couldn’t force extra innings.

Neither team played clean baseball. South Umpqua committed five errors, while Douglas had four.

Coming up, Douglas and South Umpqua will meet for baseball and softball doubleheaders on Friday. Plenty will be on the line as the teams battle for post season positioning.
