ROSEBURG – A high school student’s senior year is supposed to be filled with memories that will last a lifetime. Roseburg’s Haydn Maley is having a senior year that could probably provide enough highlights to last multiple lifetimes.

It was announced on Monday that Maley was selected as the state of Oregon’s winner of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award and he is also one of five finalists for the national award, which will be announced in June. The Dave Schultz Award recognizes and celebrates the nation’s most outstanding high school seniors for their excellence in wrestling, scholastic achievement, citizenship, and community service.

The award comes after a high school wrestling season that saw Maley enter the record books as one of the first Roseburg wrestlers to win four individual state championships. He joined teammate Layne Van Anrooy, who also accomplished the feat this year. Maley also helped lead the Indians to a fourth straight team state title.

Maley was selected as the West Region finalist and will be up against wrestlers from Oklahoma (Central Region), Minnesota (Midwest), Pennsylvania (Northeast), and Virginia (Southeast) . The West Region is made up of 11 states including Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Along with his wrestling accomplishment, of which there are many, Maley is also a 4H participant, where he was Reserve Grand Champion Showman and a Douglas County Sheep Ranchers Wool Gatherer. Maley also volunteers for the Buddy System with Down Syndrome Youth, the Lion’s Club, the City of Roseburg Beautification efforts, and the Rotary Club.

There has never been a national Dave Schultz Award winner from Oregon and if Maley were to take home the honor, he would join some distinguished company. Schultz Award winners have combined to win 16 NCAA Division I individual titles and four have also competed and excelled in Olympic competition.

The award will be handed out at the 41st Annual Honors Weekend, June 2-3, at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum in Stillwater, OK.

Previous winners of the Schultz Award at the state level from Roseburg are Reed Van Anrooy (2013) and Seth Thomas (2011).

To go along with the major recognition, Maley also got news this week that he was named to the 2017 USA Junior Pan American wrestling team. He is one of three high school seniors named to the team, while the rest are college freshman.

Maley will wrestle at 211 pounds in both Greco and Freestyle. The tournament will be held June 9-11 in Lima, Peru.
