WINSTON – An eight-run second inning propelled the Douglas softball team to a 12-2 victory over Brookings-Harbor on Monday.

The Lady Trojans recorded 10 hits in the game, which was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule. Freshman Krysten Hogue led Douglas offensively, going 4-for-4 with a double and a triple. Darian Mitchell had a home run and Molly Lavin-Williams went 2-for-3 with a double.

Douglas remains one-game ahead of South Umpqua for the Far West League championship. The league rivals meet this week for a critical three-game series.

The Lady Lancers are 15-2 on the year and currently ranked No. 1 by the OSAA, but their two losses have come in the Far West League. South Umpqua trails Douglas, which is just 9-7 overall this season and ranked 11th by the OSAA.

The two teams meet in Winston on Tuesday for the first of three meetings this week. The contest begins at 5 p.m.

The South Umpqua baseball team is alone in second place in the Far West League after defeating Siuslaw 3-2 on Monday.

The Lancers scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on a fielding error by the Vikings. Junior Jonathan Warner struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win for South Umpqua.

Up next, South Umpqua will take on Douglas. The Lancers currently hold a one-game lead over the Trojans for second place in the Far West. The two sides meet three times this week, with game one Tuesday night in Myrtle Creek at 5 p.m.
