MYRTLE CREEK – The South Umpqua Lancers picked up some big wins against the Marshfield Pirates in softball and baseball contests on Tuesday.

The No. 1 ranked Lancers’ softball team bounced back after suffering its first loss of the season to pick up a 7-2 win over the Pirates. Shalyn Gray hit a solo home run and Tayah Kelly went 2-for-4 with a triple to lead South Umpqua’s offensive attack. The Lady Lancers finished with nine hits total.

Kelley tossed a complete game and allowed just five hits to the Pirates. She struck out 13, while walking only four. The sophomore improved to 11-1 on the year.

The South Umpqua baseball team recorded 17 hits in a 15-6 win over Marshfield.

The Lancers built a 9-2 lead but gave up four runs in the bottom of the fourth to let the Pirates back in the game. The score remained close until the seventh inning, when South Umpqua exploded for six more runs to put the game away.

Cody Gray went 4-for-6 with two doubles and Tucker Pence was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI.

The game wasn’t a display of great defensive prowess for either team. South Umpqua committed four errors, while Marshfield tallied seven.
