ROSEBURG – The Roseburg girls track and field team placed first in 11 of 17 events to win a Southwest Conference dual meet against South Medford on Wednesday at Finlay Field. The Indians compiled 79 points to edge the Panthers by 15.
Roseburg’s victory was highlighted by the success of its athletes in the field events. Roseburg won every field event except for the triple jump. A trio of juniors dominated the throwing competitions. Isabella Hill, Jessica Peterson, and Sophie Ballard each took first in one of the throwing events and set new personal records in the process.
Hill placed first in the shot put and set a new PR with a throw of 32 feet, 9.5 inches. She was followed in the standings by Peterson in second and Ballard in third.
Peterson placed first in the discus and reached a new PR with a toss of 102 feet, 6 inches. Bell finished second just a few inches behind Peterson.
In the javeline, Ballard took first with a PR throw of 88 feet, 7 inches.
Another top performance for the Roseburg girls was junior Carolyn Cuilty, who won the 200 meters with a PR time of 28.16.
On the boy’s side, the Indians performed well in a number of events, but fell short of the Panthers, 88-57. The boys were also strong in the throwing events. Junior Tyler Sconce won both the shot put and the discus. Senior Sam Tibbetts won the javelin with a PR throw of 166 feet.
Up next for the Roseburg track and field teams is the Crater Classic on Saturday.
