SAN FRANCISCO – Oregon State freshman Jake Mulholland has been named the Pac-12 Conference’s Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
The left-hander from Snohomish, Wash., contributed greatly in three of the Beavers’ four wins, going 2-0 with a 1.68 earned run average and one save. He struck out nine in 10 2/3 innings, scattering five hits.
He started the week with 2 1/3 scoreless innings against Portland, picking up the save in OSU’s 4-3 win after striking out five. Mulholland earned his third win of the season in the opener Friday against Utah after 1 2/3 innings of relief, striking out two. He then threw his longest outing of the season in the Beavers’ 16-inning win on Saturday, allowing two hits and a run in 6 2/3 innings to pick up win No. 2 of the week and his fourth of the year.
Mulholland is 4-0 this season and sports a 0.59 ERA in 30 2/3 innings. He has appeared in 13 games – all in relief – and has struck out 29 to just five walks. Opponents are batting .160 against him.
The lefty is Oregon State’s fourth Pitcher of the Week honor this season, joining Luke Heimlich, Bryce Fehmel and Jake Thompson. Oregon State has 85 all-time Pitcher of the Week selections, which leads the Pac-12.
Mulholland is the first Oregon State freshman to be named Pitcher of the Week since Drew Rasmussen in 2015.
Number 1, Again
Oregon State is a consensus No. 1, according to the rankings, with only the NCBWA yet to release its weekly polls. The Beavers, who are on a 23-game win streak, are expected to maintain the top spot in that poll.
Oregon State received all 30 first-place votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
OSU is the consensus No. 1 team for the third consecutive week. The Beavers have been No. 1 by Collegiate Baseball for five straight weeks, and four in-a-row according to D1Baseball.com.
