The high school spring sports season got started Monday, the first day that teams could participate in contests and matches. The spring season includes baseball, softball, track & field, golf and tennis. A number of teams got the season started with jamborees on Monday, but there were some that dove right in to non-conference competition.

The schedule for Umpqua Basin teams was fairly light on the opening day.

The Glide baseball team opened the season with a 7-2 loss in Medford against St. Mary’s. The Wildcats struggled defensively, committing five errors and allowing five unearned runs.

The Riddle/Days Creek baseball team started the year with a 10-3 loss at Coquille on Monday. The Irish managed just one hit against five Coquille pitchers.

And the Umpqua Valley Christian Monarchs traveled to Medford for a non-league contest against Cascade Christian. The Challengers won 8-5.
