SUTHERLIN – The Sutherlin girls basketball team withstood three Douglas rallies and earned its sixth-straight trip to the OSAA Class 4A state tournament with a 51-43 playoff victory at home in the Dog Pound Saturday night.

The fifth-ranked Bulldogs (20-5) will meet fourth-ranked Mazama of Klamath Falls at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals at Forest Grove High School. The Vikings (17-6) edged No. 13 Gladstone, 33-31, Saturday.

Senior Taylor Stricklin had a double-double in the win over Douglas, with 32 points and 10 rebounds. Stricklin, the Sky-Em League Player of the Year, scored 12 points in the decisive fourth quarter. The senior hit 8 of 10 free throws in the last 2 1/2 minutes of the game to seal the victory.

The Douglas girls were a pest that wouldn’t go away. The Trojans (15-8) kept fighting back and a 3-pointer by senior Darian Mitchell made it a six-point game with :25 left. But it was Stricklin’s final two free throws that sealed the win and sent the Bulldogs back to the state tournament, where they will try to defend their three-straight state championships.

Stricklin already held the single season scoring record for Sutherlin with 511 points last year, but she broke that record when she hit a three-pointer in the second period. She now has 532 points for the season and at least two more games left to play.

Mitchell finished with 18 points to lead Douglas and junior guard Lainey Rincon had 11 for the Trojans.

Tipoff for the Sutherlin/Mazama quarterfinal game next Thursday at Forest Grove High School is set for 1:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on i101 FM with pregame coverage at 1:15 p.m.
