ROSEBURG – The high school basketball season came to an end Saturday for the Roseburg girls with a 63-45 loss to Tualatin in a play-in game at Roseburg High School.
The Indians challenged the Timberwolves throughout the first half and even led by one early in the third quarter, but Tualatin pulled away by outscoring Roseburg 31-15 in the second half.
The Timberwolves built a five-point lead in the first quarter behind a combined 11 points from Maija Giradi and Jen Crane. Roseburg battled back in the second quarter thanks to high scoring from Taylor Russell and Sammie Bergmann. The pair combined to score 13 of Roseburg’s 17 points in the period.
The Indians tied the game on two occasions before halftime, but went to the locker room down 32-30.
Roseburg junior Haley Olsen put the Indians on top 33-32 early in the third quarter with her second 3-pointer of the game. Tualatin responded by finishing the quarter on an 18-5 run and the route was on.
The Timberwolves stretched their lead to as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter.
Mikah Springer scored 11 points to lead Tualatin and Maliyah Ross added 10 points off the bench. The Timberwolves had nine players score in the game.
Roseburg sophomore Sammie Bergmann scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Indians. Taylor Russell finished with 10 points and Haley Olsen added eight.
Tualatin moves on to the first round of the 32-team state tournament. The Timberwolves will face No. 2 South Salem on Wednesday. Roseburg ends the season with a 9-15 overall record.
