PORTLAND – The Glide wrestling team advanced six wrestlers into the semifinals of the 3A state wrestling tournament at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland on Friday. The Wildcats sat in fourth place with 69.0 points after day one at the tournament.

Glide trails first place Nyssa by 24 points, but is only 5.5 points behind third place Dayton to start day two on Saturday.

The six Wildcats wrestlers have reached the semifinals are guaranteed a spot on the podium this year, but four are trying to improve on last year’s finish.

Glide’s wrestlers still in contention for an individual state title are: Kasey Collier (132), Zach Holland (145), Ryland Parazoo (152), Cayden Kangiser (170), Collyn Potter (195), and Zack Welker (220).

In the 4A state tournament, the Douglas Trojans are the highest-ranked team from the Umpqua Basin. The Trojans have Carter Dahl (170) and Braydon Schultz (195) both into the semifinals. Douglas starts day two in 13th with 26.0 points.

Sutherlin is 18th in the 4A team standings with 15.0 points. Andrew Smalley (220) is the only wrestler that made the semifinals for the Bulldogs.

South Umpqua scored 5.0 points on the first day and is 28th in the team standings. Josh Buehler is the only wrestler left standing for the Lancers. He has reached the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.

In the small school classification, Oakland’s William Powell (145) is the only local wrestler still in action. The freshman is in the semifinals of the consolation bracket.

The final day of wrestling at the state tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
