ALSEA, ORE. – The Elkton girls basketball team pulled off an upset of sorts in the first round of the 1A state playoffs on Wednesday. The No. 12 Lady Elks had to travel to Alsea for a road playoff game against the No. 34-ranked Wolverines. Despite playing on the opponent’s home court, the higher-ranked Elkton girls were able to handle Alsea 53-41.
Elkton led by eight at halftime, but the Lady Elks only scored two points in the third quarter allowing Alsea to cut the lead by down to just three. The Elkton girls regained their form to finish the game outscoring the Wolverines 15-6.
Hannah Maxwell led Elkton with 21 points. Maggie Briggs added 14.
The Elks now advance to the second round of the state playoffs and are one win away from making the state tournament final site at Baker High School.
