IMG_5140ROSEBURG – The Roseburg wrestling team dominated the Special District 6 tournament on Saturday and qualified 27 of its 28 wrestlers for the state tournament next weekend in Portland.

The Indians had 10 individual champions, which propelled their team score to 552 points. Second place Grants Pass finished with 264 points and third place North Medford was close behind with 261.

While the score was heavily in Roseburg’s favor, head coach Steve Lander said afterwards that there’s still room for improvement as his squad now prepares to win its fourth-straight state title.

“We weren’t very good for quite a few times today,” Lander explained. “Competition will do that to you. Whatever the reason was, we’ll try to fix it and be a little sharper hopefully next week.”

There will be a lot of storylines for Roseburg going into the state championship tournament on Friday morning. Seniors Layne Van Anrooy and Haydn Maley try to become the first four-time individual state champions in school history. Others will look to repeat as champs or bring home a title after falling just short during last year’s championship run.

Roseburg will also be aiming for its fourth-straight state championship and ninth team title in 11 seasons. Senior Austin Harris, who won a district title at 182 pounds, says that the goal is to win, but they’d also like to beat the school record for points scored in the state tournament.

“Last year we were a few points behind beating our state record,” Harris said. “We got a few more guys this year, so I’m thinking we can go over there and beat that record, that’d be pretty cool.”

Roseburg’s best team total at state was 298.5 points, set in 2010 when the Indians won the first of three straight state titles.

The state tournament will be held in Portland at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Wrestling starts Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. and will continue until champions are crowned Saturday night.

The Roseburg wrestling team invites the public to come help send the team off to state on Thursday around 5 p.m. at the RHS gym.
