ROSEBURG – For the first time in over a decade, the Roseburg boys basketball team has swept the season series against the South Medford Panthers.

The Indians jumped out to a large lead in the first half and held off a furious second half rally by South Medford to pull off a 62-56 win at home on Tuesday night. The victory gave Roseburg two wins against the Panthers for the first in more than 12 years. Historical records don’t go back far enough to find the last time the Indians swept a season series against South.

A 10-point first quarter by Roseburg’s Collin Warmouth helped the Indians build a 17-7 lead going to the second quarter. The Tribe stretched the lead to 14 points before the half thanks to more sharp-shooting. The Indians made six of eight three-point attempts in the first half and led 34-20 at the break.

Roseburg took a 16-point lead, its largest of the game, early in the third quarter, but the Panthers didn’t stop fighting. The lead was at 12 points going to the fourth quarter, but South Medford continued to cut the deficit down and a two-handed dunk off a steal by Chase Cota cut the lead down to just four with 3:10 left to play.

Cota was fouled while throwing down the monstrous jam, but he missed the free throw which would have made it a three-point game. The Indians responded with a 4-0 run that stretched the lead back to eight points, but again the Panthers rallied to get back within four.

A 3-pointer from South Medford’s Victor Mitchell with :18.4 seconds remaining made it 60-56. On the ensuing possession, South Medford forced a turnover with a full court press and Riley Martin had a shot in the lane that would have made it a two-point game, but it clanked off the back of the rim and the Indians grabbed the rebound.

South Medford was forced to foul Warmouth and he nailed two from the line to seal the win. Warmouth finished with a game-high 20 points. He made three of four 3-point attempts and went 11-of-13 from the free throw line.

Roseburg earned its win at the free throw line in the fourth quarter. The Indians scored all 18 of their fourth quarter points at the charity stripe. Senior Matt Stone went 10-for-10 from the line in the fourth quarter and finished with 14 points. Junior Cody Johnson had 16 points for Roseburg and made three 3-pointers.

South Medford was led by Victory Mitchell, who scored 13 points and was the only player in double figures.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Indians and moves Roseburg ahead of South Medford and Grants Pass at the bottom of the conference standings.

Up next for Roseburg is a third straight home game. The Indians host Willamette on Friday at 6:45 p.m.
