WINSTON – The Douglas boys and girls basketball teams each picked up their first league victories with wins over Brookings-Harbor on Tuesday night.
The boys snapped a five-game losing streak with a 54-51 victory over the Bruins. The Trojans built an early lead, but had to fight off Brookings-Harbor down the stretch. The Bruins used a strong start to the second half to tie the game at 37 going to the final period. Brookings took its first lead of the game midway through the fourth and held a 49-48 edge with 1:01 to play.
Douglas senior Parker Sheppard converted a three-point play on a bucket and the foul to give the Trojans a 52-48 advantage and they never trailed again. Senior Hugh Scheler led three Douglas players in double figures with 13 points. Damon Landry had 11 and Sheppard finished with 10.
The Douglas girls came back from a 5-point halftime deficit to beat the Bruins 50-43. A 13-4 scoring edge in the third quarter helped the Lady Trojans regain the lead and finish with the victory. Darian Mitchell and Rachel Hickam each recorded a double-double. Mitchell scored 23 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Hickam had 10 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four blocked shots.
Up next for Douglas is a rivalry match-up with South Umpqua on Friday.
