SUTHERLIN — The Sutherlin girls basketball team overcame an early nine-point deficit, to run away from Elmira in the second and third quarters for a 65-34 win Tuesday night and their 54th consecutive league victory.

The Bulldogs looked like they were in trouble when turnovers and hot shooting by Elmira gave the Falcons a 14-5 lead in the first period, but it turned around in the second quarter for Sutherlin.

Taylor Stricklin and Kiersten Porter poured in eight points apiece in the second period and the Bulldogs outscored the Falcons 26-8 and were never threatened again. Sutherlin led 33-22 at the half and continually pulled away, outscoring the Falcons 20-7 in the third quarter.

The Bulldog defense held the Falcons to just 12 points in the second half.

Stricklin finished with a game-high 26, including five 3-pointers, and Porter had a career-best 15 points, with a pair of threes.

The Bulldogs (12-3, 2-0 Sky-Em) hit eight 3-pointers in the game.

Miranda Jensen, a Sky-Em League first team pick last year, led Elmira with 15.
