EUGENE – The Roseburg boys basketball team twice fought back from a seven-point deficit in the second half against Willamette Friday, but a last second 3-pointer by Cody Johnson missed the mark and the Indians fell short of forcing overtime in a 50-47 loss.

Roseburg’s Luke Lucido scored all nine of the Tribe’s points in a back-and-forth first quarter that saw Roseburg lead twice, but trail 11-9 going to the second period.

Those would be the only times that the Indians would lead the game. Willamette managed to always stay one step ahead of any Roseburg rally. The Indians trailed by as much as four in the first half, but trailed only 18-16 going to the break.

Willamette pulled ahead by seven near the five minute mark of the third quarter, but again Roseburg (3-10; 0-2 SWC) fought back and trailed only 32-31 going to the fourth. With just under five minutes to play the Indians again trailed by seven, but a 14-point four quarter by Collin Warmouth helped the Tribe stay in the game.

Warmouth hit one of two 3-pointers with 2:06 remaining to tie the game at 42-42. He later made three free throws with just :6.5 let to play to get the Indians within one. Roseburg fouled on the ensuing inbound play by Willamette and junior Seth Skeele made two free throws to stretch the lead back to three.

With just seconds on the clock, the Indians managed to get down court quickly and Johnson had a clean look at a 3-pointer from about six feet behind the arc. His shot was just left of the mark and the Indians hopes of overtime came to an end.

Warmouth guided Roseburg’s second half surge, scoring 21 of his game-high 24 points after halftime. He netted 10 of his points at the free throw line, where he was perfect on 10 attempts. The point total is a new season-high for the sophomore. Lucido did most of his damage in the first half, scoring 11 of his 15 before the break.

Willamette (7-6; 3-0 SWC) was led by Noah Burke with 14. Skeele added 12 for the Wolverines.

Up next for the Indians is a trip south to visit the South Medford Panthers on Tuesday.
