Glide – The Glide Wildcats boys basketball allowed two quick 3-point field goals to start the game and weren’t able to slow down the Harrisburg Eagles Friday night, losing 28-62.
Harrisburg (10-3), jumped out to an early 6-0 start and continued to apply pressure that carried them to an 11-17 lead after one quarter. Glide committed seven fouls in the opening quarter, allowing several free throws for the Eagles who were 13-for-18 for the game. Harrisburg moved the ball extremely well on offense, probing the defense for any way to get the ball inside. The Eagles were able to find the open shooter in their offensive flow as they hit seven 3-point field goals.
In the second, the Eagles created turnovers with aggressive defense that lead to easy buckets in transition. At one stretch the Eagles created three consecutive turnovers in a row because of pressure on the ball. Tel Jones had 10 points in the first half, including three 3-pointers to lead the Eagles. Alonzo Ranch also had 10 points in the first half, and ended with 17 points for the game. Harrisburg led at the half 38-15 after producing a strong second quarter where they outscored the Wildcats 21-4.
Glide coach Jeff Smith said “We got our rear ends kicked. We faced a quality team. I was hoping we would compete a little better.”
Harrisburg continued to pour it on in the second half building a 31 point lead after 3 quarters, 56-25.
Glide (8-6) were led by senior Kyler Leishner and sophomore Dillon Towne who both had seven points.
The recent winter storm has created some issues for the Wildcats, preventing them from having many practices and canceling their game last Tuesday against Rogue River. “I’m not going to make excuses. We’ve had one and a half practices since last Thursday.” Smith said. “We weren’t as prepared and had the momentum we had going prior to the nasty weather. I think we would have gave ourselves a better chance to compete at a higher level. But we were totally dismantled in every aspect of the game.”
Glide plays at Creswell next Tuesday.
“The positive I try to get to them, is that’s what we’re trying to attain. We have to understand you have to bring it every night.” Smith added. “If you play a little smarter with more confidence, try not to get rattled, be a little more patient and more disciplined. We did some good things. We were playing better than what we represented today before the weather hit us. We’ll try to regroup. We know we can compete if we bring our best game.”
