ROSEBURG – The Roseburg boys basketball team allowed 13 three-pointers to the McKay Scots, who pulled away for a 72-56 victory on Thursday night at Roseburg High School.

The Indians held close with McKay through the first quarter, with both sides trading the lead back-and-forth. The Scots finished the quarter with a slim one-point advantage, but pulled ahead by double digits in the second period behind a nine-point scoring outburst from Josiah Castillo. The senior guard hit three of his six 3-pointers in the second quarter to help McKay outscore Roseburg 26-10 for a 38-21 halftime score.

Roseburg (3-8) trailed by as much as 25 in the third quarter, but managed to fight their way back in the fourth quarter to make the score respectable. The Indians outscored the Scots 20-11, but did much of that scoring against players from the end of McKay’s bench.

Castillo finished with a game-high 22 points to lead the Scots. He made 6-of-12 three-point attempts. McKay didn’t have another player in double figures, but had 10 players record a point. The Scots also had six players hit at least one 3-pointer.

Roseburg’s Collin Warmouth scored 19 points to lead the Indians. The sophomore made 6-of-8 from the free throw line, including five in the fourth quarter. He also had Roseburg’s only 3-pointer. Cody Johnson added 11 and brothers Matt and Jon Stone each notched seven points.

Jon, a sophomore, threw down a monstrous one-handed dunk on a breakaway early in the second half that sparked the home crowd.

The Indians had their opportunities to keep the game close or to start a rally, but they struggled to consistently beat McKay’s defensive pressure, whether full court or in the half court. Roseburg looked to use its size advantage against the Scots and did well rebounding, but missed too many offensive opportunities and couldn’t force McKay to miss from behind the arc.

Roseburg will try to regroup next week as Southwest Conference play begins. The Indians play their first three SWC games on the road, starting with a trip to Eugene to face the Sheldon Irish on Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. and radio/online coverage will begin at 6:30 p.m.
