MURPHY, ORE. – The Sutherlin girls could not overcome sickness, injuries, and lots of turnovers Wednesday afternoon, losing to Marshfield 51-43 in the first round of the Evergreen Federal Winter Classic Invitational at Hidden Valley High School.

The Bulldogs led throughout the first half and had chances to build a large lead but turnovers led to their demise. They were ahead 22-17 at the half, but in the third period, the Pirates outscored them 21-9 and Sutherlin could never regain he lead.

Freshman Kiersten Haines led the offense with 16, including three 3-pointers. Eliza Sorenson added 11 with a three-pointer. Taylor Stricken and Abigail Masterfield both had 8 for Sutherlin.

Marshfield,which improved to 7-3, started four sophomores, and was led by sophomore guard Tess Garrett with 19 points, and another sophomore post Hailey Browning had 10 points.

The Bulldogs were already hurting before the game, with second-leading scorer Harlee Baker out with a broken finger, leading scorer Taylor Stricklin suffering from illness. Then late in the game, Kiersten Porter took a charge and hit her head on the floor. She had to go to the hospital in Grants Pass and get several stitches to close the cut.

The Bulldogs fell to 6-3, losing their second game in a row, for the first time since the 2011 season.

Another long streak went by the wayside with the loss. It was the first loss to a Class 4-A opponent since the semifinals of the state tournament in 2013. They had won 67 straight against 4-A schools before the Marshfield loss.

They will try to rebound Thursday morning when they meet 5-A Eagle Point in the consolation bracket at 9:45.

The Eagles were beaten by Hidden Valley 67-30 fro drop to 0-9 for the season.
