MURPHY, ORE. – The Sutherlin girls basketball team rebounded from a turnover filled loss to Marshfield in the opening round of the Evergreen Federal Winter Classic at Hidden Valley High School on Thursday morning, defeating 5A Eagle Point 54-32 to earn a spot in the consolation championship game Friday morning.

The Bulldogs, who improved to 7-3 for the season,  got 22 points from senior Taylor Stricklin, including two 3-pointers and 6-for-6 at the free-throw line. Eliza Sorenson added 10 and Kiersten Haines just missed double figures with nine.

Sutherlin jumped out to a 14-3 lead over the winless Eagles. The Bulldogs put the game out of reach in the third quarter when Stricklin poured in 13 and they took a 19-point lead into the final quarter.

At times coach Josh Grotting had four freshman on the floor at the same time.

The Bulldogs continue to fight the injury and illness bugs with Harlee Baker out for a couple of more weeks with a broken finger, and Taylor Stricklin dealing with illness, plus two more went down with injuries late in the Eagle Point game. But Coach Grotting said they didn’t appear to be serious injuries.

The Bulldogs were scheduled to play Illinois Valley Friday afternoon at North Valley, but the time and opponent were both changed. They will now play at 10:45 a.m. against Hidden Valley and it will be at Hidden Valley High School.

The game will be broadcast on i101-FM with pregame coverage starting at 10:35 a.m.
