DRAIN – The North Douglas girls basketball team jumped out in front of the Reedsport Braves quickly Friday night as they cruised to an easy 47-20 victory. The Warriors defense was present from the beginning as they created numerous turnovers that lead to easy points on the other end. North Douglas created 24 steals on the night.

Terry Hescock, North Douglas’ interim head coach said “That was our focus to this week was to pick up the intensity on defense and put more pressure on the ball. The girls brought it to the court and that’s always satisfying when practice translates onto the floor. I was happy.”

North Douglas led 13-4 after the first quarter and continued to cash in on Reedsport turnovers the rest of the game. Reedsport ended the game with 37 turnovers on the night as they had trouble breaking the Warriors full court press. At the half North Douglas led 24-10.

In the second half, the Warriors continued to move the ball around well on offense with quick passing. They never forced a contested shot, instead patiently waited to find a good shot in the flow of offense. The Warriors led 38-14 after the third quarter and built up their lead to as many as 30 at one point in the fourth.

“That’s our goal as a team, to reverse the ball, to find the open person and get a shot that is in rhythm.” Hescock added. “I was happy with that tonight.”

Senior, Kalli Frieze led North Douglas with 17 points, including two 3-point field goals. Frieze said “It feels good (to score 17), the girls did a really good job finding me when I was open so that really helped.”

The flip side to good defensive pressure and creating turnovers is running the fast break. The Warriors fast break created a lot of easy looks on offense as they would run and look for opportunities to score. The downside however was 23 turnovers for North Douglas who had their fair share of mishaps on offense. North Douglas fouled a lot near the basket, creating 17 free throws for the Braves who were only able to convert eight of them.

North Douglas has won five games in a row. They play Chiloquin in a non-league game next Tuesday at home.
