ROSEBURG – The Roseburg girls basketball team jumped out to a big first quarter lead against Eagle Point on Tuesday and the Indians never looked back as they raced to a 79-33 victory, snapping a 3-game losing streak.
The Indians outscored the Eagles 21-7 in the opening period and stretched the advantage to 25 points by the break. Head coach Rich Robles thought it was great to see his team playing well after suffering through a losing streak and he said the strong play early really helped the team get in a groove.
“They had a great attitude about (the losing streak) and it kind of showed tonight,” said Robles. “They had a lot more fun. We shot the ball well in the first quarter and that’s always nice to get going and then that kind of breeds on itself.”
All 12 Roseburg players available to coach Robles got into the game and 10 of those players scored. Senior Valerie Viramontes had the hot hand, making three 3-pointers and leading the Indians with a game-high 19 points. Senior Isabel Verduzco added 15 points for the Tribe and junior Amaya Goins chipped in 12.
Junior Carlene Hart had 13 points for Eagle Point (0-5).
This was Roseburg’s largest point total of the season and it was the best since the season opener, when the Indians won 61-57 over West Albany.
Up next for Roseburg (2-3) is three straight road games before beginning play in the Summit Holiday Tournament in Bend on December 28. The Indians will first visit the Centennial Eagles in the Portland area on Friday. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
