EUGENE – The Umpqua men’s basketball team finished runner-up in the Dale J. Bates Invitational at Lane Community College. The Riverhawks made the title game against Tacoma on Sunday afternoon, but lost 78-62.

Grant Ellison led UCC with 18 points. Jacob Danhoff added 14 points and had nine rebounds for the Riverhawks.

Ellison was named to the All-Tournament team, along with teammate Timmy Thompson. Ellison averaged 22.3 points per game during the tournament, while Thompson averaged 15.6.

The Umpqua men won a couple of close ballgames on Friday and Saturday to make the championship round. The Riverhawks defeated South Puget Sound 79-73 in the first round and then beat Grays Harbor 76-73 in the semifinals on Saturday.

The No. 2 ranked Umpqua women doubled-up the visiting George Fox junior varsity team 98-49 on Sunday. Jordan Stotler scored 27 to lead the Lady Riverhawks and Dajanay Powell added 25.

The Umpqua men are not back to action again until after Christmas. The women’s team will play two games against the College of the Redwoods coming up this weekend.
