NORTH BEND – The Roseburg wrestling team defended its team title at the Army Strong Coast Classic by placing 11 of its 14 competitors in the top four of their weight class to beat runner-up Crook County by 74 points at North Bend High School over the weekend.

The Indians had five wrestlers win individual titles at the 30-team event. Hunter Sparks, Bennett Mesa, Layne Van Anrooy, Austin Harris, and Haydn Maley all finished first in their weight class. Cam Campbell took second at 195 pounds, while Thomas Spence, Cody Pickle, Brandon Jeffers, and Parker Adair all placed third. Shane Sabins finished fourth at 152 pounds.

The tournament could be an indication that Roseburg is primed for its fourth straight state title. The Indians dominated the competition. Austin Harris won each of his five matches by fall and Haydn Maley won all four of his by fall. Layne Van Anrooy’s championship was his fourth at the Coast Classic.

Roseburg’s junior varsity program also did well. There were nine JV champions, one runner-up, and two third place finishers.

The meet featured some of the best competition the Indians have seen so far this year, but it only continues to improve as the Tribe next heads to the Reno Tournament of Champions in Nevada later this week. The tournament is dubbed the “toughest tournament in the USA.” Last year Roseburg finished sixth out of 107 high school teams. The Indians had four wrestlers place in the top 8, led by Van Anrooy who finished 2nd at 160 pounds.
