CANBY, ORE. – The Canby boys basketball team earned its first win of the season with a comeback effort in the second half against the Roseburg Indians Friday night. The Cougars overcame an 8-point deficit in the third quarter to beat the Tribe 52-48.
A controversial travel call ended Roseburg’s chances of winning in regulation or forcing overtime. The Indians trailed 50-48 with 10 seconds to play. Collin Warmouth drove the baseline, used a spin move, and banked a shot in that would have tied the game. The Roseburg bench initially thought a foul was going to be called, but the official instead called Warmouth for a travel, negating the bucket and leaving Roseburg (1-2) with only a Hail Mary’s chance of a victory.
The Indians fouled on the ensuing inbound play and Canby’s Nate McDonald made two free throws to clinch the victory.
Neither team started the game hot, but Canby (1-2) managed to build an 11-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. That was their largest lead of the night.
Roseburg’s Cody Johnson caught fire in the second period. The junior scored 13 points to guide the Indians to a 21-16 lead at the break. Johnson stayed hot to start the second half and Roseburg stretched its lead to eight points, but the Cougars clawed their way back in to the game.
Canby tied the game at 33 on a Ronan Gay 3-pointer with a minute left in the third period and the Cougars regained a 1-point advantage going to the fourth.
The game stayed close in the final period and was tied at 40 with 3:26 to play. Canby led 50-47 with 20 seconds remaining and appeared to get the ball after the Indians lost it out of bounds on an inbound play. While the teams were getting set, Canby’s Dylan Taylor was called for a technical.
Warmouth hit one of the two technical free throws to get Roseburg within two and the Indians got possession of the ball, but Warmouth was called for the controversial travel on the next offensive play.
Warmouth and Cody Johnson led Roseburg with a game-high 18 points each. No other Roseburg players reached double figures. Three Canby players finished in double digits, led by Dylan Taylor’s 15 points.
Roseburg now has more than a week off before the Indians will host North Eugene for a non-conference game on Saturday, December 17.
