UMPQUA BASIN – The high school winter sports season gets underway Wednesday. Basketball, wrestling, and swimming teams can all start holding regular season contests. The season begins in the Umpqua Basin with a moderate slate of local basketball games.

The Roseburg girls begin the 2016-17 season Wednesday with a trip to West Albany. The Indians are coming off a disappointing early exit from the state playoffs last year and will look to make another deep run in the post season under third year head coach Rich Robles.

Roseburg and West Albany tipoff at 6:45 p.m. from West Albany High School.

Elsewhere around the region, the season begins for many Umpqua Basin basketball teams at the Bill Spelgatti Tournament in Sutherlin. The tournament includes boys and girls teams from Sutherlin, South Umpqua, Douglas, Glide, and North Douglas.

The tournament gets underway Wednesday afternoon and the first local teams to play are the Glide and Douglas girls’ teams. They face off at 5:30 p.m. Then in the night cap, the Sutherlin girls take on North Douglas at 8:30 p.m. Once again, Sutherlin basketball can be heard on i101fm and streaming online at 541radio.com. Dan Bain will broadcast the game starting with pregame at 8:15 p.m.
