SUTHERLIN – The Sutherlin girls’ basketball team picked up right where it left off with a 57-33 win over North Douglas in the first round of the Bill Spelgatti Invitational Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs eased out to a 19-7 first quarter lead, thanks to nine points in the quarter by senior Taylor Stricklin, who finished with a game-high of 23, including two 3-pointers. Freshman Kiersten Haines added 15 in her first game in a Sutherlin varsity uniform.

The Bulldogs advance to the semifinals of the tournament at 7 p.m. Friday against the Lakeview Honkers.

It was the Bulldogs 84th straight win over Oregon teams and their 24th straight win since a loss to Del Norte, California in December of last year.

In other games in the tournament Tuesday night, the Douglas girls were led by 22 points from Darian Mitchell and 11 from Lainey Rincon on the way to a 56-33 victory over Glide.

In boys action Wednesday night, North Douglas got by Grants Pass junior varsity 57-45, with Jayce Ellis leading the scoring with 20 and Riley Swafford added 19, including three 3-pointers.

The Douglas boys hung on for a tough 51-45 victory over Glide in the other game.

Thursday’s schedule has the Salem Academy girls taking on South Umpqua at 5:30 p.m. and the Salem Academy boys going against a team from Australia, the Parramatta Wildcats at 7 p.m.

In the final game of the first round, the Sutherlin boys, with head coach Willis New back to take over the program, will take on the South Umpqua boys at 8:30 p.m. and you can hear the game on i101-FM with the pregame at 8:15 p.m. and tipoff at 8:30 p.m.
